Mission Statement
My mission is to multifaceted: to expose students to new cultures and new ways of thinking about the world and their place in it; to offer students opportunities to speak, understand, read, and write in a new language in ways that are meaningful to their lives; and to engage students in activities that make them love learning while enjoy progressing at their own pace.
My Teaching Philosophy
Every student brings something special to the classroom. Together, a group of students can contribute to the whole community, encouraging, collaborating, and learning together. I believe I am the facilitator of my students' learning experience, and I work to give them the best I have to offer. This philosophy builds on the concept that student motivation is not linked to external rewards, or even the grades they receive, but on their growing thirst for knowledge.
I believe that every student can and must learn to interact with the world that is growing closer and smaller every year. They are learning that at the stroke of a computer key they can have real, first-hand encounters with people in other countries, who have different ideas, and speak other languages. They can learn to grow in this world, and enjoy its diversity by becoming an active part of it. Students need to be shown the world this way in order to be motivated to be part of it, learning to speak and understand, read and write in a foreign language. The French-speaking world offers great things, and has great needs. Some students will vacation in the Caribbean, in France, or in Canada. Others will work in the Peace Corps or in other organizations that bring them to Haiti or to Africa. In my classes, I strive to bring these opportunities to my students so they can interact with it as they start their journey, hoping that they will run the race to its fullest as they move from middle to high school.
Students all learn at their own pace as they participate in project-based activities. They are far more willing to learn when they are motivated to work at their own pace to find success. In order to provide this environment, I am the guide who has many different ways of delivering a lesson, many different activities to make it real, and many projects to help students use what they are learning in real and meaningful ways. Students easily maneuver the online world, and together we can work online through flip teaching, online work via a class wiki, and class management and instructional technology. This frees up time for their project-based learning activities where students are assessed on their progress and application of knowledge. Success is not measured by fill-in the blank worksheets, but by the communication students develop! It is an incredible joy to be a teacher in this environment!
