NBPTS Standards
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Inspire Creative classroom instruction and learning!
In 1987 the NBPTS was created. These standards flowed from the the publication of A Nation Prepared: Teachers for the 21st Century, released by the Carnegie Forum on Education and the Economy’s Task Force on Teaching as a Profession. Their link can be found by clicking here: NBPTS.
The NBPTS and the Massachusetts state standards flow together, and yet differ in a number of ways. Each of these standards strives to have teachers be leaders in the content area in which they teach, to employ a variety of teaching and classroom strategies to be effective, and to be leaders who are lifelong learners. The national standards, particularly in Standard 5, asserts that the need for collaboration among teachers, with parents and community groups, is essential to being an educational leader. This stands out from the state standards as being a crucial step beyond.
As a teacher in Massachusetts, I have also completed a portfolio designed to successfully demonstrate specific subtopics of each of the five standards. That portfolio can be found here.
